Morning Prayer - unfinished

My eyes heard words you never said.
Your voice got trapped in my head
long ago, like a capsule you'd planted
to dig up for later, that wish now granted.

You came to me with a need; yearning
a friend, you said, was that desire burning
a hole in your heart, but I should have known
by the hints you surrendered like stepping stones.

With the starts and stops of a man unsure
you insisted it was me who was insecure,
and that right there should have been my first clue
the problem wasn't me. Was the problem you

I wondered then, now know for a fact,
because the last five years have been an act
as you tried on a face, wrote the script for the play
you never intended to see light of day.

The letters and lyrics that lingered between us
made me wonder why it was you at the wheel of the bus
of our chats - with your insistent need to control the content,
your obsessive attention to control our time spent.

As I unwind the knots and twists of your lies
pull the thread, undo the ties
I imagine myself in a large swimming pool
holding my breath underwater until you'll

Come to your senses and stop all the nonsense -
this isn't a game, it isn't a contest!
I'll rise to the surface, shake the water from my hair,
And return to being friends; THIS is my morning prayer.
