Hey Now Hey Now

the blue cap he wore bore the mark of the team
he'd rallied around all his life, or maybe just since
he'd reached 'proud Grandaddy', watching his boys

come up to the plate as the dugout
caught "hey now, hey now" and rolled
their eyes at the old man squatting on the edge

of the bleachers, withered and frail,
not the ball player he'd once been who swung for the fences,
the way he taught his boys, but they all caught on

the day the blue cap didn't show
to yell "hey now, hey now" because that's what you do
when you're cheering for the home team.

we miss you Grandaddy.
