Field of Vision

Field of vision is your dream.
It’s what you see that is different from me.
It could be cloudy; it could be magnified.
It could be shaded, or red, or through a pin-hole.
It’s all in how you look at it.

Where do your views come from -
inside your head? experience?
I don’t see things your way.
I’m farsighted, not near,
but only in one eye these days.

The other I save for reading poetry,
and it is red and tired,
from too much time spent in my head
looking at things my way,
not yours.

Maybe if I just borrow your glasses ...
I doubt it would help.
Our eyes are different – brown and blue.
Where you see close up - the here and now -
I see how things could be – will be – might be – one day.

I see hope and a future;
You see the only the past.
Is your view a good one?
Is it blooming?  Is it colorful?
Now mine is hot and oppressive.

I long for something cooler.
I long to be alone with thoughts all day.
I long to have no one who needs me,
Where I can be accountable only to me –
But I long for you, too.

The way you long – long – long for a sense of belonging.
You long to be honorable, to be thought of highly.
You long to have the world recognize what I have –
That you really matter,
Like I really matter.

Can’t you see that?
If we matter to each other,
what else really matters?
Put on my glasses and tell me what you see.
Can you see me?
